Luncheon Keynote Session - Happy Trails: The Mental Health Effects of Outdoor Experience
Presented by Dr. Guy Ilagan, Ph.D, LPCS, NCC, SCCA President Elect 2023-2024, SCCA Board Member 2021-2023

Guy will discuss findings from his three recent studies on the effects of three-day backpacking trips on college women and student veterans. Many people are surprised to hear of the mental health and wellness effects of outdoor experience. Student backpackers in Guy's studies showed gains in happiness, stress-coping, self-efficacy, and sense of belonging. Other studies have shown increased feelings of autonomy, improved self-perception, a positive attitude towards life, an overall sense of improved well-being, fitness motivation, and improved sleep. So, what is it about backpacking that makes these dramatic findings possible and reproducible? Guy will endeavor to answer that question and others during this lively discussion. Hopefully, you will find yourselves motivated to play outside.
